Statement

Date: May 10, 2010
Location: Staten Island, NY
Issues: Judicial Branch

Today, President Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to replace Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court. Rep. McMahon's statement on the nomination follows:

"I commend President Obama's nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan. Her addition to the Court will diversify an institution whose work affects the lives of every American. The President's choice also reaffirms his goal of sending the Senate an individual who will apply a common sense approach to judicial review. Throughout her career, Solicitor General Kagan, a native New Yorker, was a clerk for the esteemed Justice Thurgood Marshall, an attorney at the White House, and both the first female Dean of Harvard Law School and the first female Solicitor General. If confirmed, she will bring to the Supreme Court an extraordinary legal aptitude as an attorney and scholar, as well as a wealth of experience outside the courtroom that can help our highest Court move forward in the best direction for the citizens of this Nation."
